Paul gloried in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ because His death alone is the ground of a believer’s righteousness, his acceptance with God, and the end of such a futile quest for salvation through one’s own good works. He knew that God would never ever reduce His terms. He does not promise salvation and eternal life upon man’s sincerity in religion, or piety in prayer, or industry in endeavour. It is clear: “He that believes shall be saved; he who does NOT believe shall be damned”. Our faith in Christ, who He is and what He has done for us through death at the Cross. God has accepted the offering up of His Son in substitutionary atonement for our sins. Saving faith is, therefore, our accepting of God’s acceptance of His Son.
