As one of the remnant (not a theologian) I am impressed by both the Word and the Spirit portrayed in most of this “blog”. … There's an excellent article in CETF # 45 (September 2008) by T. Austin Sparks adapted by plp that speaks of the absolute requirement in the church of the Levitical Priestly representation. … This vital element is all but lost and replaced by just about everything else! My point is that the remnant must adopt the dimensions of the Levitical priesthood to be of any value. A “called out” person may stay in a congregation - never as “holier than thou” and self-righteous, to challenge and dialogue with those who are classified “spiritual leaders”. My guess is that he/she will not last too long! The article is well worth reading (though preached 50 years ago) and should certainly impact those who are spiritually attuned. Hebrews 12:14 states “without holiness no man shall see the Lord”. Holiness is a spiritual quality and qualification, and the hardest thing for the human heart to accommodate. I just read your article The Judgement Was Set where you were filled with righteous indignation over the Moslem chanting ... After having enjoyed a steady diet of Dave Hunt's books and DVDs, I'm horrified at the subtle lies and deceptions of Moslem leaders here in my own country and state. I'm 65 now, was a writer and journalist all my life and I love the Lord completely ... If I can be of any help, even assisting with editing ... I'm here and open to you.
I firmly believe in your wonderful "warning" ministry and am very pleased the Lord is using you in such a vital way. "Will He find faith when He returns?" is a verse that has me shaking in my shoes sometimes. Your ministry is very likely to pull some out of the fire, be encouraged Philip, please don’t give up brother.

Philip - I have been most encouraged by your clear dividing line between humanistic philosophies—”man's thinking”—and “God’s thinking” as revealed in Holy Scripture, personified in Jesus Christ, and quickened to us by the Holy Spirit. This has helpedmeimmensely to separate the "wheat" from the "tares" in my own mind, as God rebuilds and cleanses my own heart. It's clear to me that much of my personal struggles have come from pastors, Bible teachers, so-called "Christian" books that have admired and promoted the ways of the world as successful and desirable and thus mix these thoughts with the pure, holy and most precious Word of God. The effect of your clear teaching is that the Bible has become much more precious to me....while the thinking of this world has become much more worthless in my eyes. Funny, how that as you see the truth, you agree with theWord that these lies and tares are "good for nothing"...worthless...a waste of time. Ed If you are saved by the Blood of Jesus you are already part of the Church (the called out ones). If it is a matter of fellowship then, yes, you need to be with fellow believers in Christ. There will more than likely be other believers who have the same discernment as you who have already "left". Track them down and have some fellowship. [There is a list of Church Fellowships which link with CWM posted on our CWMFellowship website at http://www.cwmfellowship.org/ Click on “Churches” at top of page.] Jesus is the Good Shepherd - listen for His call. He will direct you. If you are lost and have fallen off the track He is the ONE who leaves the 99 and goes after the lost. Your sufficiency should be in Him. Don't play church. Hello, just wondered if I may offer some insight on this topic. Firstly, I cannot find in my Bible where it says spiritual gifts ceased at 12.00 midnight 100 AD. Some time ago I shared with a small group on this topic but space does not permit too much explanation here.
Ed: Tru is a pseudonym used by the author of this “blog”. Tru appealed to the Greek in the New Testament to rightly justify the Pentecostal as opposed to the cessationist position. Not being a Greek scholar I referred this to my friend and adviser, Spencer Gear, who is both a student and a former lecturer in Greek. What follows is his interaction with the comments of Tru on theCWM blog:
TRU (assertion one) - Firstly, there are a number of ways to negate something in Greek. For the sake of our topic I'll explain just two. An action can be negated "before" the action has commenced and an action can be negated "during" the event. For example: I have just baked a cake and told my daughter 'don't eat that cake' before she even starts on it. Or if she has already started eating it I can tell her to stop.
SPENCER – OK.
TRU (assertion two) - When Paul says, in 1 Cor. 14:39,40 ”Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues” the Greek verb forbid (kwluete) is an imperative, present, active coupled with the negative particle 'may.' The meaning is, 'do not forbid' (to speak in tongues) which is already in operation and will continue on habitually with no indication of ceasing.
SPENCER - In what this person is writing, the explanation of the tense of the verb is correct, but the significance of the tense is not adequately explained. The "forbidding" is what was continuing habitually, which Paul told the Corinthians to stop. Mē (pronounced may) followed by a present tense imperative means "do not continue an action" or "stop an existing action." So, what was continuing was the forbidding of tongues and Paul was saying that they should stop forbidding.
TRU (assertion three) - The other point I would like to make is the difference between the Greek and English word for 'perfect.' Paul says in 1 Cor 13:10 - "....but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears." Cessationists will tell you that 'perfection' here is Christ or the Bible. It's obvious to me that they are unable to read or translate Greek. The participle form used above 'telayown' of the noun 'telos' simply means mature, full-grown, complete. It is not like our Western Protestant idea of perfection. Simply put, the spiritual gifts are for bringing believers to a place of maturity and when this is accomplished then spiritual gifts will "not disappear" but just be rendered inoperable (nullified) cf. Rom 11:29. Therefore, since not all believers have yet come to a state of complete maturity, spiritual gifts will continue until Christ comes back for us.We certainly won't need them then.Anyway, hope this little snippet helps... SPENCER - In 13:10, the "perfection" as explained by this person is correct.
Gordon Fee's explanation of 13:10 sounds reasonable to me:
At the coming of Christ the final purpose of God's saving work in Christ will have been reached; at that point those gifts now necessary for the building up of the church in the present age will disappear, because 'the complete' will have come" (Gordon D. Fee 1989, The First Epistle to the Corinthians, the New International Commentary on the New Testament, William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, Grand Rapids, Michigan, p. 646).

Classical or Traditional Pentecostalism has its roots in the Wesleyan, Holiness, and Arminian theology. Pentecostalism sprung up in the early 1900s out of certain Holiness groups in America. Historically, it grew out of a Bible school in Topeka, Kansas and a mission in Azusa Street, California. While the church had experienced several powerful moves of God in the Great Awakenings, this was the first time the Baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of [speaking in] tongues was sought out on a grand scale in church history.
Early Pentecostalism taught the major themes of salvation, healing, baptisms, and the second coming of Christ. It generally embracedArminian theology taught by John Wesley. Most of these people who experienced this revival felt rejected and spurned by their home churches.As a result, years later, many Pentecostal associations and denominations formed to unify in doctrine and practice.
In later times, the Latter Rain and Charismatic movements shook the classical groups and challenged the earlier Pentecostal groups. Some embraced, some did not. Pentecostalism has grown and changed over the years. Some things have been good, some not so good.All we can do as any believer, nomatter what brand or creed, is test all things, prove all things, and in love correct when necessary. Let's get back to the Bible, the teachings of Christ and the apostles. Let another Reformation arise in the church to bring the Bible back and the true power of the Spirit, and most of all, the true message of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Let’s quit relying on media, programs, and seeker sensitive agenda to replace and water down the eternal message of our Supreme Lord Jesus Christ. Let's return to and earnestly contend for the faith once delivered to the saints. Who cares what church you go to? If you are saved, you are my brother or sister. Let's turn this thing around and stand up against the garbage that is another gospel which is no Gospel at all. God has a plan for his glorious church in these last days. Paul never said that he did not speak in tongues in the "church" [i.e. the gathering of God's people], but gave his preference in view of all being blessed. When you read his arguments for this it can get rather confusing if you do not understand the apostle's heart. For instance, on the one part he says that "tongues are a sign to the unbeliever" [to prevent it, then, could lead to a soul being lost], yet on the other he says (If all speak with tongues) "the unlearned and unbelieving will consider you mad." I think I'll leave this apparent contradiction open for discussion. I'd like to hear your perspectives - Kerry Stevenson NSW, Australia

AoG - CONCERN SPREADS IN UK Philip - I have now had time to read your article on AoG; a different denomination. It makes interesting reading. All of these recent leaders [named in the article] appear to have major issues that need investigating. I trust you will be honest and biblical in your insights. One thing I ask as you write your book please offer answers to the problems. Even here [S. Wales, UK] … a few local churches…including the 'mother church in this area... have resigned from the denomination [AoG] due to leadership issues but the local people need answers in order for them to go on in God and break new ground with the Gospel. I have read some of your papers/magazines before and fear that unearthing the heretics is only half the job. Please use your experience, stature and background to build for the future - In Him – CP.
Thank you for your updated newsletter. I was interested in your comments on the AOG. Funny isn't it I was brought up as a strict Muslim, training to be a cleric. I found salvation in an evangelical free Methodist church, but the churchwas closed by the Methodist movement. I got a new job in another city and ended up going to a strong Pentecostal AOG church. Ten years later I became an AOG pastor in a thriving church and was blessed. Under conviction of the Lord [about the] power/control/manipulation in its regional and national structure I resigned as a pastor and went back to ministry in Methodism. I am blessed as an evangelist with them. For me the points you have made are valid and true. I agree [that] the Pentecostal [experience] is for all the church of Jesus Christ to receive. You don't have to be AOG or Elim or belong to a Pentecostal denomination. The experience of Pentecost is for all who believe in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and move in the Holy Spirit. Dear CETF - Thank you for sending me the magazine, it is very informative.Amember posed a question which I did not have all the facts and decided to address it in due course. The question was 'Should young Chr ist ians have girlfriends/boyfriends? This [also raises a] question about premarital sex. I declined to answer immediately because I thought it required some external input as well as a lot more research than I had available to me at the time. I will really appreciate your help. –Anon.
RESPONSE - plp: The Bible teaches, – “A man who has friends must himself be friendly, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother” - Proverbs 18:24 (NKJV). The first part of that text gives the answer to the frequent complaint about other people being “unfriendly.” Usually the problem is totally with the complainant and always with him/her in part. If you are not friendly to others they won't be to you. The second part of the text shows where our priority as Christians, whether young or old, should rest. Our Lord Jesus is the greatest friend we can ever have and we must see that in all our relationships with others we do not offend or displease Him. This means obeying His Word. There are definite guidelines given in Scripture regarding sexual relationships. Hebrews 13: 4 clearly teaches that sexual activity outside of marriage is wrong. Those who do it are called “fornicators and adulterers” whom God will judge. This and other passages of the Bible show that marriage is more than just a sexual act, which is what some teach today. Marriage is, and has always been, an agreement or covenant between two people of the opposite sex before witnesses. Biblically this is to precede sexual intercourse. Christians obey the Bible. 1 Thessalonians 4: 3 – “For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality” (NKJV). This is applicable to all but especially to young Christians. This verse tells us what is God's will and that it is not possible to know God's will if we practise sexual immorality (KJV – “fornication”).

The whole girlfriend/boyfriend issue can be complex and confusing. The problem today is that western civilisation in which we live (by its shows, movies, stars, idols and perceptions) can influence many, especially the young and impressionable. The girlfriend/ boyfriend idea, in principle, is NOT wrong. The outworking of that principle is where the problem lies. It is unfortunate and saddening to hear of Christian families where the (unmarried) teenage daughter is expecting … the whole family grieves! The child herself may be repentant, remorseful, sorry and ashamed – but that does not change her condition nor absolve her of the status of motherhood soon to come upon her. Pregnancy—or rather what caused it, i.e. fornication—wasn't the first step down to that sin. Little by little boundaries are stretched and tried, from the thrill of holding hands, to the thrill of that first kiss … and when that no longer gets the heart racing, the next step is taken, and the next and the next after that. Fornication becomes not such a big leap once the conscience becomes sufficiently seared to enable one to justify what has happened by claiming love and devotion.
The path to that road is short, and starts, not by doing those things that we shouldn't, but failing to do those things we should. When devotion to true prayer, praise, worship and daily Bible study (not just reading) is neglected we automatically put God second and something else first. If God and His Word are not pre-eminent then the opinions of others (including our own) become loudest and most influential. It is not girlfriend/boyfriend that is the major issue, but how that relationship fits into one's relationship with God. This is the issue and priority!
Another thing is what Scripture says about bad company corrupting good morals (1 Cor 15:33), and the extent that believers should associate with unbelievers (2 Cor 6:14,15), etc. Christian children, teenagers and parents who overlook and/or dismiss biblical instructions and warnings are asking for trouble, especially when it comes to the girlfriend/boyfriend situation. I, unfortunately, know of situations where the teenage daughter of a pastor would say she was staying at a friend's place and go out partying and/or to her boyfriend's instead… and then stand up on the platform as part of the “praise and worship” team the next day with her hand raised singing and “praising” God (much to the amusement of a teenage sceptic 'dragged' to church by his family). Likewise, I have heard from unbelievers dating Christian girls who say of their girlfriend, with a smile or smirk, “she's not that innocent!” What a witness to the unsaved! Not to mention the disdain and ridicule to Christianity in general, even if not voiced, when the believing party in the relationship wants the unbeliever to come to church with them. Why would they even consider going? You (the Christian) are doing what they (the pagan) are doing, your “religion” hasn't made you any different or any better. If anything they just view “you” as a religious hypocrite and “your” religion a waste of time. Teaching our children ethics – i.e. knowing what is right and wrong – is not the same as our child having morals – i.e. doing what is right, rather than what is wrong.

Dear Mr Powell, - Beneath is a statement from the leadership of the ACC re: MG [letter held at CWM Office in Brisbane]. By his statement does MG already have his sights set on returning to the pulpit or is that NOT part of the “recovery and restitution” to which he refers? "I am fully committed to a process of discipline, recovery and restitution and will see this process through to whatever extent is necessary." It boggles the mind. I do not understand how stupid he and the leaders of the ACC think people are. Hello - My son and I were preaching in Manchester City Centre (UK) when I was approached by two police officers on horseback and told that I had committed a "Breach of the Peace" by stating that Father Christmas did not exist. Apparently a complaint had been made because a small child was upset by this. One of the officers claimed to be a Christian. I stated that I was not breaking any law, and that it was my right to preach. They disagreed and told me that what I was doing was a criminal offence. I was subsequently placed under police arrest. The officer, who claimed to be a Christian, bent down from the horse, grabbed me by the coat and pulled me up. He was very angry. Then my son was pushed out of the way and I was dragged along by the officer on horseback through the street to await a police vehicle to transport me to the police station. After giving the officers my details (ID) I was locked in the van. After a few minutes the van door was opened and I was told that they wouldn't be taking me into custody after all. I was “de-arrested”, and told I would be escorted out of the City centre. If I returned that day I would be arrested and charged. We have preached the Gospel in this place for over four years and handed out thousands of Gospel tracts, encountered hostility from drunks, irate Moslems and a couple of homosexual men because of our message. People can denounce idolatry, drunkenness, religion, hypocrisy, televangelists, sexual immorality, violence whatever, and that is fine. People can blaspheme God, advertise products through sexual images on TV and the street, can read soft pornographic materials on public transport, be drunk and lewd, spout out anti-Semitic propaganda, deny the Son of God, but it is a wicked offence to deny Father Christmas! Ed – In a private email John writes – “My son, Miguel, and I would value your continued prayers as we seek to preach the Gospel on the streets of Manchester. Miguel has been threatened with violence a few times by irate Moslems. One even threatened to slit his throat!…Street evangelism is disappearing in the UK. Many churches don't evangelise! Those groups that do "hit the streets" quite often don't evangelise but simply handout invitations to come to events or sing contemporary "Christian" Songs to entertain.”
Hi Philip - Greetings in Jesus' Name. We have received and thoroughly appreciated CETF for many years. Thank you for undertaking under the guidance of the Holy Spirit with the utmost diligence this most important work on behalf of the Kingdom of our God and His Christ, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. I spotted in the above issue a small error that I am sure is a "slip of the pen", but the more I thought about it the more I felt I had to draw your attention to it so that you could then decide on the appropriate course of action. The error is on page 20, in the middle of the otherwise excellent article by Joseph Chambers on Todd Bentley. In the centre of the last paragraph on this page the following sentence appears:- "The fact that women are helpmates for man is plainly stated in the Holy Bible". As I am confident you are most certainly aware, the promise from Genesis 2:18b KJV is actually:-"I will make him an help meet for him." To put this into modern English I have used the Amplified Bible rendition of this verse:- "I will make him a helper meet (suitable, adapted, complementary) for him." Could I suggest that the use of the word "helpmate" does not adequately match the critically important role of a lady in the Kingdom of God, especially when she is a Christian woman who is married to a Christian man and irrespective of whether or not he is “in the ministry?” Yours in Christ, David Harvey - Lower Hutt,New Zealand.

Dear CWM - Thanks for the update. For some time now, I have suspected that Daniel's prophecy concerning Rome's final form was that of Islam: Partly of Iron and partly of Clay; a divided kingdom. The prophecy is spoken of by Daniel - “And whereas you saw the feet and toes, part of potters' clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as you saw the iron mixed with miry clay” (Daniel 2:41). Adopting Sharia (Islamic Law) was a foolish move on the EU's part and further separates the peoples of Europe. These two cultures will never blend: The Europeans of iron, and the Islamist of a dry and dusty land - Jeffrey Sotherlund - Mansfield Bible Church - Burleson, Tx. 76028, USA.

Interestingly after receiving our comments we received a request to “unsubscribe” this person from the CWM e- Mailer. Such is life and so much for the claimed “philosophical discussion.”
———Don’t underestimate me!!!We are merely having a philosophical discussion. I respect your beliefs and I'm sure you reciprocate. The 'rules for living' are inherent in all cultures........built in, commonsense. No one has a monopoly on them. The guys who wrote the Bible put them down in one book, which we all like to read. As I said, the same rules appear in the Koran and other religious books. Have you ever studied theology? I went out with a theology student when I was at College and we had the most interesting discussions. I think if we all broaden our knowledge of other's beliefs, i.e. make a study of other religions, we will realize that all belief systems have the same foundation. Have you read the Koran? I'm sure Philip studied other belief systems during his training and therefore will be broadminded, as opposed to small/narrow/closed minded. Editorial Response to PK - Life is too short to get involved in all the alternatives to reality in respect of a relationship with God. True faith based on real revelation brings that relationship. You have either faith or credulity. Faith in the God of the Bible is not based on reason but it is not unreasonable. The evidence is such that in the face of it the Bible can say dogmatically that he/she is a fool who says there is NO God. That evidence is from the order of creation and the amazing symmetry of the Bible itself and the incredible prophecy regarding events, especially as they relate to Israel. Notwithstanding the stupidity of the Nazi anti-Semitism that murdered 6 million Jews another mad man is going to try a similar thing. The President of Iran is calling for the eradication of the Jewish nation. The Bible has clearly told us that this will happen again and again, but those who are against Israel will not ultimately triumph and those who fail to support them in their great dilemmas will suffer. It has always happened and it will happen until the end of time when the Jewish Jesus, who is the ONLY Saviour of the whole world will return to ultimately set up His everlasting Kingdom. So the evidence for the TRUTH of the reality of the God of the Bible is:
In saying that we do not infer that the matter can be proven dogmatically. We simply call you and all others to examine the evidence. God cannot be proved scientifically, The infinite cannot be contained in a test tube or rationalised by the finite human mind. That is not a cop-out. It is a simple and essential element of faith.
The same does not apply to the Muslim Allah or to their so-called holy book the Koran, which contradicts itself over and over again. I am not an authority on Islam or on the Koran, but I know men who are intimately linked with that philosophy (religion) who are - one from Egypt and one from Pakistan. I have copied them both in. Time permitting they may make some comment to you, not just as part of debate but in the hope of guiding your thoughts towards who we believe is THE Truth i.e. the Lord Jesus Christ. I have heard these men speak on such topics as the doctrines of "Jihad" and "Tik'ia" based on the Koran which they both know extremely well. One of them has read the Koran more than 100 times and can quote most of it from memory including chapter and verse - called something else in the Koran. They both strongly argue that the Koran is the most confusing book you could ever read and this is what Islam predicates much of its activity towards controlling the world upon.
The Bible is entirely different. Please read the attached article as a contribution to this discussion. It is written by one of the men whom I most admire in the world. He has a brilliant mind and is one of the two most gracious men I have ever met in my life. The other was a former director of the atomic authority in UK and also an eminent Christian who gave himself in his later years to the study of Bible prophecy and became a prolific writer on that topic. His name was Fredrick Tatford. He died a very old man a number of years ago.
